As promised last week, we will continue this small detour from our journey towards the WanderFoods land, by presenting some additional insight on the basics of nutrition. I feel it's useful to first make sure we all share the same level of understanding of the nutritional body of knowledge before we go on analyzing any more WanderFoods.
Micro-nutrients are dietary components, often referred to as Vitamins and Minerals, which although only required by the body in small amounts, are vital to development, disease prevention, and well-being. Micro-nutrients are not produced in the body and must be derived from the diet!
Vitamins and Minerals are considered essential nutrients because, acting in concert, they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage. Did you know that Vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), whereas Minerals are inorganic elements that come from the soil and water and are absorbed by plants or eaten by animals?
Despite what first comes to mind when we think about Vitamins & Minerals, they are not best found in... pills! The foods we eat contain a notable variety of micro-nutrient mixes and the choices and combinations are literally limitless. However, one should be aware not to overdo: moderation in all food choices is the only golden rule of nutrition.
Much insight is available about Vitamins & Minerals. However, I have found that this lean and printable handout in pdf format offered by the McKinley Health Center of the University of Illinois nicely sums everything up so... enjoy!
Less loose words today, yet more core info. I really wanna hear your thoughts: Did you know the difference between Vitamins & Minerals? What did you think of the handout? Do you manage to cover your daily vitamin and mineral needs through the food you eat?
